Ticks and public health

TBE in Denmark

SSI classifies Bornholm, Tisvilde Hegn and the surrounding area, and Tokkekøb Hegn as known TBE risk areas in Denmark. In 2026, cases with presumed infection have been recorded in all three areas. Myggetal.dk shows the activity of castor bean ticks (Ixodes ricinus) – not the occurrence of TBE virus.

Biting midges and livestock health

Bluetongue (BTV)

BTV-3 has been detected in Denmark since August 2024, with outbreaks also recorded during the 2025/26 season. Biting midges of the genus Culicoides can transmit the virus. The graphs show midge activity, not whether midges are infected or the local outbreak risk.

BTV surveillance

More field sites

Since 2024, we have added more field sites to the surveillance of BTV vectors – biting midges of the genus Culicoides. This strengthens geographical coverage and provides a better basis for monitoring midge activity in more parts of Denmark.

Myggetal.dk shows general trends in vector activity. Always consult SSI and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration for current health advice, outbreaks and official information.

Knowledge behind the numbers

Why do we monitor vectors?

Outbreaks of bluetongue and Schmallenberg virus have demonstrated that vector-borne disease patterns can change rapidly in Europe. Travel, trade, climate and other environmental changes may affect vector distributions, seasonal activity and the risk of new disease outbreaks.

To protect human and animal health, animal welfare and livestock production, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration funds national vector surveillance carried out by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The data support risk assessment, early warning and monitoring of seasonal developments. Myggetal.dk shows general trends for Denmark and is not a local forecast.

Mosquitoes

We monitor seasonal activity and mosquito nuisance because very high activity can affect people and livestock. Surveillance may also detect changes in established or newly arriving species and supports assessments of West Nile, Usutu and Sindbis viruses, among others.

Biting midges

Biting midges are monitored particularly because they can transmit bluetongue and Schmallenberg viruses among cattle, sheep and other ruminants. Their activity is therefore important when assessing transmission risk and livestock welfare.

Ticks

Tick measurements show when and how strongly castor bean ticks are active. This is relevant to exposure to infections including Lyme borreliosis and TBE, and to tracking species that may be introduced or spread towards Denmark.
